John Morgan

I build and lead engineering teams. Most recently I was Head of Engineering at ManageXR, where the engineering org grew from 3 people to 15. Before that I spent four years on Google's Search Ranking team. I like shipping real products with small teams, and I treat security and compliance as a design constraint from day one.

Right now I'm building small products at Faebriel. I also do engineering advisory work.

Philosophy

How I think about engineering

Excellent engineering depends on excellent communication. I write things down, make sure the reasons behind decisions are documented, and care more about building the right thing than the most complex one.

The best engineers are the ones who learn fastest, so I care about tight feedback loops and getting the most out of every attempt. That includes AI-native engineering, which I pushed for across ManageXR.

Experience

Work & education

ManageXR · Head of Engineering

Grew the engineering and QA team from 3 to 15. Owned architecture, hiring, and engineering standards, and stayed hands-on in backend and Android. Led security and compliance for the company (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001) and worked with enterprise customers and partners during sales.

Google · Senior Software Engineer, Tech Lead

Led technical direction for a critical Search Ranking backend component and reduced recall loss by more than 10% with large-scale ETL and feature engineering. Redesigned the deep neural network in the serving path, cutting tail latency by 15ms. Built the testing infrastructure for a major infrastructure redesign.

Stanford University · B.S. Computer Science

Human-Computer Interaction track. 1st place, CS Department Software Fair, for disaster response software. Debate Society captain, 2014–2016.
